Social Networking and how I should use it for a new restaurant?

I have been doing my homework and reading up on the technology of social networking. I am pretty versed with the multiple outlets available.

What is unclear is how do you use the networks to launch or create a buzz around a new restaurant (which is exactly what I am doing).

I understand there is no easy answer nor is there a magic wand. Sadly, I myself do not hit the demographics of my target audience so I can not rely on my own social network to generate the hype.

So the question I put to you, and anyone is:
You are opening up a Sports Pub. How do you build excitement and sincere interest in it?

This is a real business with a target opening of late June.

MAWorking,

Why not host some Tweetups at your venue. Doing this will bring local Twitterers to your restaurant where they will by default talk up your food, atmosphere, etc. The host of this community has a very active local Twitter network and could be a gateway for you.

Do this on a regular basis and your venue just might bee seen as the real-world Twtter hang out. Take it a step further and host some uStream.com broadcasts from the store.

Best,

Thank you for responding. I was loosing faith after the ad post above.
Tweetups work well if you are already open, but this would be pre-opening marketing. Spreading of the excitement if you like.

I still say host a Tweetup. I am not sure what sort of food you will be serving once you open but host a cookout/tweetup. Perhaps you can serve some of your anchor dishes. Invite the local media as well (print, radio, TV, bloggers, etc.). I am sure if you pitch the idea of a Tweetup to the local reporters/editors some will bite. Social media is hot in the news and spin it as a recession breaking strategy and you might just win in the online as well as offline space.

I recommend talking to Justin Levy, he owns a restaurant in western MA and uses social media exclusively to promote it - you can read his food blog at http://www.primecutsblog.com - he is a great guy, very approachable. Good luck!

Do you have a web site already? What about a blog? What about blogging the journey from concept to grand opening? If it's a sports pub you can obviously tie in current sports references as well. Create some hype and anticipation for your restaurant brand. You can Tweet your blog and create a Facebook page for your restaurant as well. I would pay special attention to ways you can tie into the neighborhood where you plan to open.

There are lots of ways to tie in social media with a traditional marketing plan as well. Don't overlook PR (both on and offline) as a means to generate some buzz.

Kelli is right! And if you don't maintain a blog yourself, seek out Charlotte area bloggers (I'm sure there are many of us on this site alone) who can put the word out for you!
