Social Media Club, Charlotte, NC

If you get it, share it

I read through the overview of the Social Media Charlotte October 8 Meeting and I definitely think that's the right direction. I know quite a few of us missed the 1st meeting so I was hoping this could be a place to brainstorm for some other ideas on what SMC could possibly do. I know some of these are a bit far fetched but I just felt I should throw them out there.

I for one think an issue that could be addressed is the fact that a lot of businesses would benefit from learning what social media campaigns can do for them. SMC could consider organizing events down the road and target local NC businesses. This would give us a good chance to drop some social media knowledge on them and spread the word client side.

It's probably not cost effective or the appropriate approach but at Plaid we did a nationwide social media tour to help us pick up some clients - the great part about it was allowing people to see social media in action: http://www.plaidnation.com/ - is there some way we could apply the product in action to this group so that we could help inspire businesses out there? It's one thing to talk about it - another to see it.

Another idea could be to sponsor a microsite that illustrates the benefits of social media in a style similar to the Hitch Hiker's intro: http://is.gd/3Nsp - this could possibly be an invitation to an event?

Anybody else?

Hey Rob,
I haven't digested all this fully yet, but wanted to chime in with a few things.
1. nice mustache :)
2. not sure if I said hi when we connected on Twitter... welcome to Charlotte. I enjoyed checking out your site.
3. love that last idea you posted. At #btynbiz lunch last week, @schotthepburn expressed interest in finding a video that demonstrated a social media value: specifically, Twitter backchannel discussions being monitored realtime by a panel at a conference, causing them to change course to address the audience's suggestions. It got me thinking that a lot of benefits of social media - and even plain ol' explanations/demonstrations - might be more effectively conveyed via visual means (the commoncraft videos such as Twitter in plain english are good examples). This brings us back to your idea. Done in a concise way, it can get the idea across, and be interesting, even entertaining, and perhaps be used as a teaser to promote greater involvement of some sort (join the club, attend a conference, hire a consultant...). Good stuff. Let's do it all. ;)

Thanks Ben. I've since adopted wearing bowler hats and monocles.

As for the Microsite idea - you're spot on - this kinda points the idea in a sort of Social Media aggregator direction. Those YouTube videos are the perfect type of thing to include. Plenty of us come across great examples everyday that could be detailed regarding effectiveness and potential applications for local businesses. We could also allow the viewer to filter these entries by service to show how companies out there are using social media in the real world. This would be a great tool for letting people know what Social Media Charlotte is all about and what it's members can do for them.

cool ideas. what about some interactive physical booth in uptown to show people social media in action. like a board of polaroids of everyone with their 3 "tags" to represent them and then yarn or something connecting the like tags. could do it with people that know each other, but it would take a lot longer to connect the dots if it happened at all. not sure, first thing i thought of. but i like the direction of what your talking about
